Step 1 of 3: Equipment

For a mini-split installation in Jefferson County, the cooling side of the equipment is never what drives the specification. Homes in Jefferson County, WA have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. The compressor here is rated and selected entirely around heating output, which means the contractor has to establish the house's heat loss and match it against the unit's capacity curve at low outdoor temperatures. A system that passes a generic sizing check but undershoots on heating leaves the homeowner with backup resistance heat carrying the whole load on the coldest nights. The outdoor unit the contractor selects, and how well the refrigerant lines and indoor heads are placed, determines whether the system can actually hold the house on a hard winter day.

The electrical service panel is where a mini-split installation in Jefferson County often stalls. Half the homes in Jefferson County, Washington were built in 1988 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Houses from that era were wired around the load demands of equipment that drew far less than a modern mini-split, and what the panel was sized for then is frequently not what the new unit needs now. A contractor will pull the panel cover before writing a quote, because the gap between what is there and what the circuit requires decides whether the install is straightforward or whether an electrician has to come first.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor units connected by lines running to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall, inside the room being conditioned. That is the unit a homeowner sees and interacts with daily. The outdoor condenser sits on a pad or brackets outside the house and houses the compressor and the components that drive the whole system.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall, connecting the indoor and outdoor units. A condensate drain line travels alongside it, carrying moisture out of the house. A dedicated electrical disconnect is mounted near the outdoor unit as well.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed in your home.

Licensing and Legal Requirements in Jefferson County, Washington

Washington requires contractor registration rather than an HVAC licence: every contractor must register with the Department of Labor and Industries, and advertising, bidding or working as a contractor without that registration is a gross misdemeanour.
