Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Single-story house with beige horizontal lap siding and a dark gray shingled gable roof, with a single window and a recessed front door, fronted by a patchy green and brown lawn under a clear blue sky.

A contractor quoting a mini-split installation in Clallam County has one job to get right: heating load. Homes in Clallam County, WA have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. The compressor will run in heat-pump mode through cold months, and that sustained heating demand is what determines which unit belongs in the house. Oversizing for cooling headroom that never materializes wastes money on capacity the refrigerant circuit will never use in that direction. The licensed installer has to work from the actual load, which here is entirely on the heating side.

A gray metal electrical panel enclosure mounted on a stained concrete basement wall, with conduit and pipes running above and below it, and a bucket and mop leaning against the wall to the right.

Electrical panels in houses built for the loads of that era were not sized with today's equipment in mind. Half the homes in Clallam County, Washington were built in 1982 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split draws dedicated circuits, and in a house where the panel was already near capacity when the original heating ran, adding that load without an upgrade is not an option a contractor can skip past. The panel gets looked at before anything else on the quote.

The Parts of a Mini-split System Being Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by a line to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building, with a sofa and bed inside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall in the room being served, and it is the piece most visible to anyone in that space. The outdoor unit sits on the ground or on a bracket outside the home, housing the compressor and the components that drive the whole system.

A set of refrigerant lines runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units, traveling alongside a condensate drain line that carries away moisture. A wall-mounted thermostat or wired controller goes up in the room and gives the occupant direct control over temperature and fan speed.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed in your home.

Licensing and Legal Requirements in Clallam County, Washington

Washington requires contractor registration rather than an HVAC licence: every contractor must register with the Department of Labor and Industries, and advertising, bidding or working as a contractor without that registration is a gross misdemeanour.
