Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story house with tan horizontal siding and a dark shingled roof, fronted by a mowed lawn, trimmed shrubs, leafy trees on both sides, and a concrete walkway leading from a wet sidewalk to the white front door.

A contractor quoting a mini-split installation here is sizing entirely for heating load. Homes in Cowlitz County, WA have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. The compressor runs through cold months and stands idle when temperatures rise, which means summer never exercises the cooling side of the system. A fault in the reversing valve or the condenser circuit can sit undetected until a homeowner calls on the first genuinely warm day, which is exactly when service schedules are full. Contractors install the cooling capacity anyway, but the heating spec drives every decision about the unit size and the placement of the heads.

A gray metal electrical panel cabinet mounted on a stained concrete basement wall, with pipes and wooden joists overhead and a mop and bucket in the adjoining room.

The electrical service in much of this county's housing was sized for loads that predate modern mini-split equipment, and what a panel actually has available is something a contractor has to measure before a quote means anything. Half the homes in Cowlitz County, Washington were built in 1976 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house that has been rewired in pieces over the decades may look adequate on paper and fall short once a new unit's draw is added to what is already running. The panel is where the installation either becomes straightforward or picks up added scope.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and Where They Land

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by refrigerant lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room you want conditioned. It draws in room air, moves it across a coil, and sends treated air back out through a set of adjustable vanes. Most homeowners notice this unit first because it is the only piece of the system they see from inside the house.

The outdoor unit sits on the ground or on a wall bracket outside the home and houses the compressor and the condenser coil. A refrigerant line set runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the two units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture from the indoor handler to the outside.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece positions in your home.

Licensing and Legal Requirements in Cowlitz County, Washington

Washington requires contractor registration rather than an HVAC licence: every contractor must register with the Department of Labor and Industries, and advertising, bidding or working as a contractor without that registration is a gross misdemeanour.
