Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story light-colored house with horizontal siding, a covered front porch with white railings and columns, flanked by green trees and shrubs, with a concrete walkway leading to a wet sidewalk and street.

Sizing a mini-split here starts from a different question than it does in most of Washington. The compressor will carry all its load in heating mode, and the outdoor unit needs to be matched to winter temperatures, not to a cooling demand that never materializes. Homes in Wahkiakum County, WA have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. A contractor quoting this install sets aside the cooling side of the calculation and works out how much heating capacity the house needs on the coldest days, then checks whether the unit holds that capacity at low outdoor temperatures rather than just at a mild baseline.

Electrical panels in older housing stock were sized for the loads those houses were built to carry, and mini-splits draw differently from whatever came before them. Half the homes in Wahkiakum County, Washington were built in 1978 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting an installation here checks the panel first, because the service capacity decides whether the new equipment can run without a panel upgrade, and that answer comes before any line is run or bracket is mounted.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric cutaway illustration of a two-room house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall in the room being conditioned. It is the unit a homeowner sees every day, and it is where conditioned air enters the space. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a pad or bracket against an exterior wall, and houses the compressor and coil that do the heavy work.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the two units, bundled together with a condensate drain line and the power and communication wiring. A disconnect box is mounted on the exterior wall near the condenser, giving the installer a local shutoff point for the outdoor equipment.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed for your specific home.

Licensing and Legal Requirements in Wahkiakum County, Washington

Washington requires contractor registration rather than an HVAC licence: every contractor must register with the Department of Labor and Industries, and advertising, bidding or working as a contractor without that registration is a gross misdemeanour.
