Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story cream-colored house with horizontal siding, a gray hipped roof and a covered front porch, set behind a mown lawn with large leafy trees on both sides and a concrete sidewalk and street in the foreground.

A contractor quoting a mini-split installation in Thurston County sizes for one job only: heating. Homes in Thurston County, WA have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. The compressor cycles through the cold months and then sits. Long idle periods let refrigerant migrate and seals dry out, and the first genuinely cold day of the next season is when those faults show up. A contractor who accounts for that pattern at install, choosing a unit rated for low-ambient operation and commissioning it properly, gives the system a better chance of answering when it is called.

A closed gray metal electrical panel mounted on a stained concrete basement wall with conduits entering from above, and a broom, bucket, and metal ductwork under wooden joists in the background.

Electrical panels in houses built for an earlier generation of heating equipment often run short when a mini-split goes in. Half the homes in Thurston County, Washington were built in 1991 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A panel sized for that era may not carry what a modern system draws without an upgrade, and that upgrade can change the scope of the job before the unit is ever mounted. The ductwork question is separate from the electrical one, but for a ductless mini-split it is the panel and the circuit run that a contractor has to price first.

The Parts of a Mini-split System Involved in an HVAC Installation

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house with a dark tiled gable roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor split air conditioning units connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler is the piece a homeowner sees most clearly. It mounts high on a wall inside the room and moves conditioned air through the space. Outside the house, the condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket and handles the exchange with the outdoor air. These two units are the core of what a contractor works with during an HVAC installation.

A refrigerant line set runs between the indoor and outdoor units, passing through a small penetration in the wall. A condensate drain line also exits the indoor unit, carrying moisture outside. Some installations include a disconnect box mounted near the outdoor unit, giving a local shutoff point for the system.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what the configuration looks like for your specific home.

Licensing and Legal Requirements in Thurston County, Washington

Washington requires contractor registration rather than an HVAC licence: every contractor must register with the Department of Labor and Industries, and advertising, bidding or working as a contractor without that registration is a gross misdemeanour.
